Treptower Park

Another gorgeous Sunday in Berlin.

For today’s edition of “Riding the Ring” (the S-Bahn Ring trains run the loop around the city. It’s a great way to get everywhere.)  we are off to Treptower Park.

Treptower Park runs along the Spree out in Treptow.  Perfect for a lazy sunny day.

I have yet to buy a bike.  Berlin is a great bike city, and I want to bike more, but I am not sure how much I will use it, so I signed up for NextBike which allows me to grab a bike from pretty much anywhere in the city.

I peddled along the Spree, stopping to enjoy the amazing views. First stop, the Rose Garden.   Like most Berlin parks, Treptower has a lot of beautiful flowers growing in various spots.    There”s even a big splash fountain.  My favorite part though was this crazy little dog & bird fountain.  What inspired this I have no idea. But I love it.

Next, a leisurely bike along the river.   There”s a little bridge over to the Insel restaurant on the Island of Youth.  There seemed to be a pretty happening scene over there. That will be a destination for another weekend.

There”s even a cafe on a boat – though I was more interested in the ducks and ducklings.

There’s  a long, easy shady path along the river by the abandoned Spreewald amusement park.

Lots of places to stop and relax. IMG_4071

On the other side of Treptower Park is the Soviet War Memorial

The Soviet War Memorial is a vast war memorial and military cemetery in Berlin‘s Treptower Park. It was built to the design of the Soviet architect Yakov Belopolsky to commemorate 7,000 of the 80,000 Soviet soldiers who fell in the Battle of Berlin in April–May 1945. It opened four years after World War II on May 8, 1949. The Memorial served as the central war memorial of East Germany.

Across from the park is my favorite Apotheke building:

On the way home, I stopped by Ernst Thallman Park. Ernst Thallman was a Weimar era leader of the Communist Party.

I didn’t spend much time there today- but I will definitely back.  It’s close to my house and it has a dog pool with a waterfall!

Until next Sunday, Auf Weidersehen.
